5 (10)m, Winged Yam Root is a fast growing herbaceous twining vine with a large storage root with fine edible white flesh. It makes most ornamental, large, broadly heartshaped, fresh green leaves on winged stems and axillary born aerial bulbils. The roots are peeled and then either cooked or fried and served to various dishes. It is native of tropical Southeast Asia, and nowadays widely cultivated throughout the tropics, especially Polynesia. For any rich, well drained soil in a sunny spot, during dormancy in winter keep tubers dry at some 7°C to 15°C. VII-IX.
Note: all green parts (leaves, stem, flowers, fruits and seeds) as well as the raw tuber are poisonous if ingested !
